BRUCERT CONDUCTS INTERNET SECURITY AWARENESS WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS & TEACHERS

Date: July 06, 2012

Brunei Computer Emergency Response Team (BruCERT) today conducted an info-sharing session for 60 parents and teachers of Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan (MSPSBS) and Berakas Secondary School. The aim was to create awareness of the real dangers that children are facing online, especially through misuse of social networks. This initiative was co-organised by both schools as part of their outreach program, and held at MSPSBS.

The session began with a briefing by Mohamad Azad Zaki Haji Mohd Tahir of BruCERT. In addition to the many benefits of giving online access to children, the speaker highlighted various negative aspects including viewing inappropriate content, cyberbullying, sexting and sexual grooming by online predators. Parents were given tips for good online parenting, and methods to monitor online activity at home.

The briefing was followed by a hands-on interactive tutorial for attendees to learn about free tools that help in monitoring children’s online activities and behaviour. During the tutorial it was stressed that monitoring of online activities is more successful when parents foster open and positive communication with children.

Members of the public who would like to learn more about this topic can contact BruCERT at cert@brucert.org.bn or call 2458001 during office hours.
